The “Remote Chaos Experience” will take place online until December 30th. The first day plus program recommendations.
The “remote Chaos Experience” aka # rC3 of the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) started on Sunday. Usually at this time of year the Chaos Communication Congress takes place with around 17,000 visitors, but this year it had to be canceled due to Corona. The organization team wanted to avoid a “superspreader event”, it was said at the opening, which is why it was decided in September to hold an online event instead.
Anyone who has got hold of a ticket (even an online event cannot be scaled indefinitely) has at least been able to relive the Congress feeling a little since Sunday in the “2D world”. In the 2D world, avatars with nicknames can scurry through the rooms and assemblies and meet up to four people there and video or audio chat. The notorious “Fairydust” is just as present in the virtual world as the popular “ball pit”. To wallow virtually in one of the many ball pools is likely to have delighted the hearts of regular congress visitors.
Hackerspaces remodeled
The individual hackerspaces are available in the 2D world, some of them are beautifully recreated and provide additional photo material with recordings from the hackerspace. There is, for example, a photo of the refrigerator from Vienna's Metalab, which is well filled with Club Maté bottles.
Many assemblies were still “work in progress” on Sunday, but that is also the case at every Chaos Communication Congress – new things are added every day, and some things are really only finished on the last day shortly before dismantling. Why should it be different in the virtual world? Instead of in the 2D world, many people quickly met via Jitsi in the lounge rooms of the various hackerspaces.
What should be less funny for the visitors of the remote Chaos Experience is that neither the 2D world nor the diverse streaming program was really stable on Sunday. 404 error messages popped up in the 2D world, some talks could not be streamed because the server was overloaded. As every year, the exciting presentations are streamed free of charge on media.ccc.de and can be followed without a ticket. On Monday lunchtime there was definitely a lot of “bustle” in the virtual world, so a lot of people were romping around in the 2D landscape.
At the opening of # rC3 there were numerous video recordings of medical staff who, thanks to the Corona crisis, had to struggle with a lot of overload and many challenges this year. This made it clear to take the corona crisis seriously. The program also includes talks about the Stop Corona app as well as a talk about “the daily madness in the emergency room”.
The program with community stages
You can browse the # rC3 program yourself in the so-called “timetable”. It is then streamed live here. This year there are two “main halls”, rc1 and rc2, as well as 15 community stages. These also contribute to the program: c-base Mainhall, Chaosstudio Hamburg, Chaostrawler, Chaos-West TV, Chaoszone TV, franconian.net, Hacc / about: Future, KreaturWorks, Open Infrastructure Orbit / about: Freedom, Remote Rhein Ruhr Stage, Remaining reality, broadcasting center, Wikipaka and X-Hain Berlin.
The official program also includes numerous Internet luminaries, such as Bruce Schneier, Cory Doctorow and Ross Anderson. There is also a strong focus on science fiction and literature with readings by Marc Uwe-Kling, Andreas Eschbach and Theresa Hanning.
