A powerful eruption of a giant underwater volcano in the Pacific Ocean has caused a tsunami threat in a number of places in the region – from the United States to Japan, New Zealand and Australia.
According to the Air Force, because of the eruption, waves more than a meter high appeared on the coast of the island nation of Tonga, near which the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Haapai volcano was located.
Island residents said that the eruption was so powerful that the ground shook under their feet for several minutes. There was a rumble all around that resembled thunder.
Meanwhile, on the island of Vanuatu, waves were reported that reach 2.5 m in height.
Residents were told that the waves would continue to appear throughout the coming night.
Coastal residents in a number of countries are being urged to stay away from the ocean until the tsunami threat has passed.
