French geopolitologist, publicist Alexander Del Val commented on the liquidation of the Memorial human rights center. He told Lente.ru that the charges against the center are very serious and justifies the dissolution of any organization.
The political scientist recalled that Memorial is accused of supporting organizations recognized as terrorist in the Russian Federation, as well as the rehabilitation of Nazi criminals who were passed off as victims of the Soviet system.
“Western clichés about the bias of Russian justice are outdated. To comment on the merits of the court case, as our [Western] journalists, politicians, and social activists do, without even holding it in their hands, to put it mildly, is inappropriate, ”the expert emphasized. Val also added that Russia won the war and does not need “the historical revisionism that Memorial imposed.”
The liquidated center, according to the political scientist, created a sense of guilt, destroying national cohesion.
During the discussion of the topic of the Memorial on December 16 in the European Parliament, the Deputy of the European Parliament from the Federal Republic of Germany Maximilian Krach said that Memorial did not focus on studying the past, but became “a central platform for opposing state policy in Russia.”
Gunnar Beck, Member of the European Parliament from Germany, during the debates, in turn, noted that the EU condemns the Russian approach, but at the same time, both Germany and the EU complicate the procedure for financing parties, media and NGOs from abroad. According to the MP, media groups in the US also restrict free speech at their discretion in the EU. In addition, Beck recalled that Germany refuses to issue broadcasting licenses to RT. “The West calls its donors stakeholders, and the Russians – agents,” he concluded.
On Wednesday, December 29, the Moscow City Court decided to liquidate the Memorial Human Rights Center. The prosecutor's office stated that the organization's finances were not transparent and that it supported illegal protests. On December 28, the Russian Supreme Court liquidated the human rights society.
