An increase of 3.3 percent compared to the previous month
Industrial production in France rose significantly more than expected in January. The broad production increased by 3.3 percent compared to the previous month, as the statistics office Insee announced in Paris. Economists had only expected an increase of 0.5 percent on average. In addition, the decline in December was somewhat lower than initially reported.
The renewed tightening of the corona restrictions had impacted industrial production in November and December, albeit not as much as the service sector. Compared to the same month last year, industrial production fell by 0.2 percent in January. Here economists had expected a decline of 2.8 percent.
In manufacturing, production also rose by 3.3 percent. However, Insee points out that the data are still below the level of February 2020, the last month before corona restrictions were first introduced.
