France decided to cut two old submarines in half to assemble a new one from them. The fact is that a fire broke out on one of the submarines, but it damaged only part of the submarine.
We are talking about the nuclear submarine Perle. A fire at her repair dock happened in 2020. The bow of the submarine was badly burned, and could not be restored. The back part remained intact. Therefore, they decided to connect it with half of the submarine of the same Saphir class.
The second submarine was decommissioned and sent for dismantling in 2019. Fortunately, the French did not have time to start the work. Experts have evaluated the front end of the Saphir and concluded that it is strong enough to complement the rear end of the Perle.
In the coming months, it is planned to weld together two parts of the submarines. The new submarine will turn out to be one and a half meters longer than other submarines of its class.
