The French National Assembly has rejected a draft resolution calling on the government to grant political asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. This is reported by RIA Novosti.

17 deputies spoke in support, 31 opposed it. The draft resolution was submitted for consideration by a group of parliamentarians. They offered the French authorities to give Assange asylum in a country that protects freedom of the press and the individual.

The authors of the initiative noted that the founder of WikiLeaks has been subjected to judicial, “but in fact political persecution” by the United States for more than a decade.

In December 2021, it became known that Assange filed a petition to appeal the court’s decision on extradition to the United States. The High Court of England and Wales allowed Assange’s extradition to the United States on December 10. Thus, the court granted the request for an appeal from Washington, which tried to challenge the previous decision on the ban on extradition.
