The French Ministry of Health reported 208 thousand new COVID-19 infections per day. This became known at a meeting of the Legislation Committee of the National Assembly, France TV Info reports.
French Minister of Health Olivier Veran called the new data on the incidence “dizzying”. The daily infection rates declined steadily over several weeks, in part due to the nature of the delta strain, which is less infectious than the omicron strain. The minister called the record rapid spread of the new COVID-19 variation a “tidal wave.”
According to Veran's calculations, every second in France, two French people test positive for COVID-19. “In total, this is about a million citizens, or 10 percent of the country's population. Not a single age category could avoid the fifth wave of the disease, ”the minister added.
On December 28, the French authorities announced the tightening of epidemiological restrictions for citizens amid the spread of the omicron strain of the coronavirus. In addition, the permitted number of visitors to public events in the premises will be reduced to two thousand. At the same time, the French Ministry of Health did not introduce a curfew in the country.
Restrictions have increased due to a sharp deterioration in the situation with COVID-19. So, on December 25, it was reported that more than 100 thousand cases of coronavirus infection were detected in France per day. Given the new information, it is expected that the authorities will introduce additional restrictive measures.
