The French Chamber of Accounts noticed the problem of spending donations for the restoration of Notre Dame Cathedral – some of them went to other purposes. Le Figaro reports.
It is noted that the Accounts Chamber is currently dealing with two issues at once. The first is why the Ministry of Culture does not seek to establish the causes that led to the fire. Until now, it is only known that it was not a deliberate arson. The supervisory authority believes that an investigation into the reasons will help the state avoid this in the future.

The second question concerns the misuse of donations for restoration – a total of 825 million euros were received. Thus, a specially created state fund used up to half a million euros of this money for administrative expenses. In particular, the salary of one of the head of such an institution, General Jorzelin, is six thousand euros. The Accounts Chamber doubted that donors suspected such a waste of their donations.
Earlier it became known that the French billionaires did not fulfill their promises to transfer financial assistance to restore the destroyed cathedral. The charitable foundation, created to collect donations for the reconstruction of the national monument damaged in the fire, did not receive a cent from them.
Notre Dame Cathedral caught fire on the evening of April 15, 2019. The fire destroyed most of the roof and the spire. It was finally extinguished only the next morning: at night, firefighters were still struggling with individual fires. As a result of the emergency, three people were injured. French President Emmanuel Macron said that the restoration of the cathedral will take five years.
