France and Poland to discuss sending 40,000 European soldiers to Ukraine

by alex

Back in February, Macron first put forward the idea of sending NATO troops to Ukraine, but did not specify the conditions under which this would happen.

On Thursday, December 12, French President Emmanuel Macron will arrive in Warsaw to discuss with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk a plan for a European peacekeeping mission that would would preserve Ukraine's sovereignty within the framework of a possible agreement between Trump and Putin.

This is reported by the Polish publication Rzeczpospolita.

As former NATO Deputy Secretary General Camille Grand explained to the publication, the essence of the French proposal is a peacekeeping mission that would guarantee that the Kremlin will not violate a possible ceasefire and the established demarcation line in Ukraine in the future.

Back in February, Macron first put forward the idea of sending NATO troops to Ukraine. However, he did not specify the conditions under which this would happen.

He expressed this opinion in more detail during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on November 11 in Paris. For a similar purpose, on November 27, he convened the leaders of the Scandinavian and Baltic countries (NB8) and Poland in Harpsund.

Elie Tenenbaum, Director of the Center for Security Studies at the French Institute of International Relations, who is working on the project for such a mission, explained that the contingent could consist of five brigades (about 40 thousand soldiers). Poland could take command of one of them.

This was confirmed to Politico by an EU diplomat and a French official.

“It's true,” the diplomat said when asked about a report of talks between the two countries on the possible deployment of a 40,000-strong foreign peacekeeping force in Ukraine. He did not specify from which countries the soldiers could arrive.

According to Camille Grand, the more countries take part in such a peacekeeping mission, the greater the chance that Russia will not dare to attack Ukraine again.

He assumes that after the February elections Germany will join it (the main contender for the post of Chancellor Merz has so far ruled out this possibility), the Netherlands is also interested in the project. However, in addition to Poland and the NB8 countries, the participation of France and Great Britain in the development of the mission is fundamentally important.

Recall that it was previously reported that French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Poland, where he will discuss the plan for a European peacekeeping mission to preserve the sovereignty of Ukraine.
