Four bodies, a skeleton and 11 tons of debris removed from Everest

The soldiers spent 55 days on this.

The Nepalese army was tasked with clearing the world's highest mountain, Everest. This year, soldiers spent 55 days removing 11 tons of debris, four bodies and one skeleton from the summit and neighboring Himalayan mountains Nuptse and Lhotse.

The Daily Star writes about this.

Experts say more than 200 bodies and 50 tons of debris remain on Everest. Since 2019, 119 tons of garbage, 14 bodies and several skeletons have been collected.

This year, authorities sought to improve rescue efforts and reduce debris by forcing climbers to wear tracking devices and bring back their own feces.

Rakesh Gurung, director of Nepal's tourism department for mountaineering, said the government plans to create a team of mountain rangers to combat the problem.

The government issued 421 permits for the spring climbing season that ended in May, up from a record 478 permits last year. Together with Nepalese guides, 600 people climbed Everest this year. Eight climbers are dead or missing, up from 19 last year.

British man Daniel Paterson and his Nepalese guide Pasthenji Sherpa are among those missing after 21 May fell under an ice collapse.

Paterson's family has started fundraising to hire a team to search for them, but this week said the search was “impossible” due to the location and the danger of the operation.

Gurung said the number of permits was lower this year due to the global economic situation, China, which is also issuing permits, and national elections in India, which reduced the number of climbers from there.

Last month, Nepal's Supreme Court ordered the government to limit the issuance of permits. Gurung added that the government is considering suspending climbers to ease traffic jams at the summit. The government will work with experts to determine the safe number of people allowed on the mountain.

“Without scientific research, it is impossible to say what quantity would be ideal for Everest,” he added.

Recall that the Nepalese made a record number of ascents of Everest. A 54-year-old man conquered the world's highest mountain for the 29th time.
