American scientists have discovered an antibody that helps in the fight against strains of SARS-CoV-2 and even other related coronaviruses.
This is the S2H97 “superantbody”. It was discovered during a study of 12 antibodies from the blood of people who had had a coronavirus infection. All studied antibodies bind to an important site of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus – the receptor binding domain (RBD).
Scientists have compiled a list of several thousand mutations that arise in this section of the coronavirus. This helped them understand which of the antibodies is more effective.
The S2H97 antibody has been shown to protect against infection in laboratory hamsters. It binds to a well-hidden portion of the receptor-binding domain.
The discovery should help create medicines to fight COVID-19 and other likely infections in the future.
