Qatar could host a Formula 1 race for the first time this year. As reported by several specialist media, the Losail International Circuit north of Doha is to step in for the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, which was canceled due to the corona pandemic. This race was originally planned for November 21, but cannot take place for the second year in a row due to the strict entry and quarantine regulations.

Formula 1 wants to publish a revised racing calendar in the coming weeks, which has become necessary due to a series of cancellations. The Japanese Grand Prix was only canceled in October last week, and there is no competition in Canada or Singapore either. There are also doubts as to whether races can be held in Brazil and Mexico. In addition, the situation in Turkey is difficult.

It now seems possible that the Formula 1 season will end with a three-pack in the desert. The last two races of the season in Saudi Arabia (December 5th) and Abu Dhabi (December 12th) are already planned. Another race a week earlier in Qatar would be a sensible choice, at least logistically. Due to many human rights violations, the country, which is to host the soccer World Cup next year, is heavily criticized.

Formula 1 is still willing to pull through the record calendar with 23 stops. Since races are no longer possible in Europe this late in the year, there is a lack of alternatives. Therefore, another race in the also controversial Bahrain seems possible.
