Karagaev will be in custody for two months.

In Kazakhstan, where mass protests continue, former vice minister of energy Zhumabay Karagaev has been detained.

This was reported by the press service of the Financial Monitoring Agency.

It is noted that Karagaev is suspected of involvement in the unjustified increase in gas prices. By the way, this is why mass protests broke out in Kazakhstan at the beginning of 2022.

It should be noted that on January 15, the ex-vice minister was first dismissed from his position, which he had headed since December 2019. And then they were already kept together with the heads of electronic trading platforms and persons involved in the increase in prices for liquefied petroleum gas in the Mangistau region.

Karagaev will be in custody for at least two months. While the investigation is ongoing.

Recall that since the beginning of January, violent protests continued in Kazakhstan, which escalated into armed clashes. One of their slogans was “Grandfather, go away”, which is addressed to former President Nursultan Nazarbayev. He has never been in public since. However, he seems to support the actions of his successor, President Tokayev, who, in order to restore order in the country, invited the CSTO troops to Kazakhstan – from Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia. Since January 13, they have already begun to withdraw from the country.
