Carter was seriously ill in his last years.
Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has died. He turned 100 in October, making him the oldest US president in history.
The Washington Post reports this.
Carter's son confirmed his death, but did not specify the cause. Back in February 2023, the Carter Center reported that the former president had decided to stop treatment after a series of hospitalizations and spend his final days at home under observation.
In recent years, Carter had been battling an aggressive form of melanoma that had metastasized to his liver and brain.
Jimmy Carter became the 39th President of the United States in 1977. One of the key achievements of his term was the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, which laid the foundation for peace in the Middle East.
However, Carter failed to win a second term due to a number of crises: economic recession, high inflation, unemployment and energy instability. His reputation was especially negatively affected by the Iranian crisis of 1979, when American diplomats were taken hostage in Tehran.
Despite the difficulties of the presidency, Carter received recognition after the end of his political career. In 2002, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his significant contribution to the promotion of peace, the protection of human rights and the resolution of conflicts in the world.
