Ukraine does not have the right to join NATO, and NATO, in turn, is not obliged to accept Ukraine. This was stated in his Twitter account by former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul.

According to him, membership in the organization must be earned, as well as obtaining the consent of all countries of the North Atlantic Alliance. “Of course, Ukraine can join NATO. But she doesn't have that right. The consent of all members of the alliance is required,” McFaul said.

Earlier, US Chargé d'Affaires in Ukraine Christina Quinn said that Ukraine is taking the necessary steps to become a member of NATO. She also noted that Ukraine should have “a little patience” in order to continue to work and use the tools that already exist.

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana, in turn, said that Ukraine's entry into the alliance in the near future is impossible. According to him, for Ukraine's membership in NATO, there must be a consensus in the alliance, which is absent today. Geoane added that NATO supports Kiev, but is not going to take part in hostilities in the country.
