Joe Biden
Former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul spoke about the attitude of President-elect Joe Biden towards friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He is quoted by Interfax.
“There will certainly be some changes compared to President [Donald] Trump. First, President Biden will not seek friendship with President Putin. And Trump really wanted to be his friend, ”McFaul said.
He also named the second difference in the new president's policy towards Moscow. According to the diplomat, Biden will “talk more about democracy and human rights” in Russia and other countries.
McFaul suggested that, in general, the Democrat's team will make more efforts to develop bilateral relations with Russia's neighbors: for example, Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia. He hoped that Washington and Moscow would be able to establish “more stable and rational relations.”
On December 15, Putin congratulated Biden on his victory in the presidential election. In the telegram, the Russian leader wished the President-elect every success and expressed confidence that Russia and the United States “can, despite their differences, really contribute to solving many problems and challenges that the world is currently facing.”
Joe Biden declared himself the elected President of the United States on November 7 – before the official announcement of the voting results.
