Former Greek President Karolos Papoulias has died at the age of 92, according to Reuters.

He ruled the country from 2005 to 2015, and served as foreign minister in the 1980s and 1990s. Papoulias was a member of the center-left party, Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK).

The current President of Greece, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, noted the participation of Papoulias in the resistance to the Nazi occupation during the Second World War, as well as in the struggle against the dictatorship of the “black colonels” in 1967-1974. According to her, he defended the ideals of freedom and justice all his life.

Earlier, at the age of 91, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu died. He received the award in 1984 “for courage and heroism in the fight against apartheid” and became the first black bishop in South Africa.
