The former head of the German government, Gerhard Schroeder, is a long-time supporter of Russia.

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, a long-time supporter of Russia, has been nominated as a candidate for the board of directors of the Russian state-owned company Gazprom.

This was reported in the press service of the company on Friday, February 4.

The ex-chancellor appeared on the list of candidates along with ten others, including Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, Russian Energy Minister Nikolai Shulginov, Gazprom Chairman Alexey Miller, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation Viktor Zubkov and others.

Schroeder became the only foreign candidate, taking the place of Timur Kulibayev, the head of the Kazenergy energy complex and the son-in-law of the former President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Gerhard Schroeder has been heading the Board of Directors of Rosneft since 2017, as well as the board of directors of Nord Stream 2, owned by Russian Gazprom.

The former head of the German government is a long-time supporter of Russia. In 2018, he got into the Peacemaker base because of “an attempt to legalize the seizure of the Ukrainian Crimea by Russian occupiers and justify the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.”

The election of the board members will take place on June 30 in St. Petersburg during the annual General meeting of Gazprom shareholders.

Earlier, the German Ministry of Defense called the Russian Nord Stream-2 pipeline a purely economic project.
