The words of the German Ambassador to Lithuania Matthias Sonn about the goals of the USSR in World War II are a provocation. This was stated by the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova at a briefing, it was broadcast on the department's Facebook page.

According to the diplomat, Moscow is outraged by the speech of the head of the diplomatic mission, who called “the establishment of Stalin's repressive rule in the defeated country” as the goal of freeing Germany from fascism. Zakharova stressed that given the history of World War II, the speech “sounded particularly cynical and defiant.” In this regard, Russia expects an explanation from Berlin.

The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman added that this is not the first such case in recent years. Zakharova noted that in Berlin she is increasingly “identifying the communist and national socialist regimes”, as they seek to “emasculate Germany's responsibility for the inhuman crimes of Nazism.”

The diplomat also stressed that the war against Nazi Germany was a battle for freedom and independence for the USSR. According to her, the current approach of the German side calls into question the process of post-war reconciliation of the peoples of the two countries.

In May, the Polish Foreign Ministry indicated that the Third Reich was not the only culprit of the Second World War. Warsaw considered that Russia was also responsible for the start of the war.
