The Russian Foreign Ministry commented on the US accusations against the Russians for hacking and ransomware. The statement was published on the agency's website.
“As usual, no evidence has been presented. The hackneyed theses about the “involvement” of our country in a wide range of destructive actions in the information space have been circulated, ”the text says.
The Foreign Ministry denied Washington's accusations, stressing that Russian state structures “have nothing to do with malicious activity” on the Internet. The text notes that the statements of the States are based on political considerations, as well as the desire of “Russophobic forces in the United States” to speak on certain topics ahead of the presidential elections.
On October 19, the US indicted six Russians on hacking charges. As noted, they have all been implicated in “some of the world's most destructive cyberattacks.” Among them are the attack on the power system of Ukraine, interference in Georgia, during the elections in France and in connection with the 2018 Olympics. We are talking, in particular, about the spread of the NotPetya ransomware virus in 2017, which infected devices around the world and caused damage worth millions of dollars. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also accused Russia of “neglecting international stability” in cyberspace.
A NotPetya attack in 2017 disrupted infrastructure in Ukraine, with disruptions to the Central Bank of Ukraine, Kiev's main airport, and the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. At the same time, dangerous software has also spread among Russian enterprises. In the United States, the NotPetya attack was called “the most destructive and costly cyber attack in history,” and Moscow was blamed for the incident.
