Ford has to recall 3 million vehicles in the US

The automaker Ford will have to recall three million vehicles in the US. The reason is apparently defective airbags.

The US traffic regulator NHTSA on Tuesday (local time) rejected an application from the second largest US automaker, Ford, to circumvent the recall of around three million cars in the US. The problem with the vehicles: the airbags from the supplier Takata may be defective. Ford now has 30 days to submit an appropriate plan on how the affected car owners in the USA are to be informed and the problems resolved, APA and dpa report.

According to the traffic authorities, the Ford models Ranger, Fusion and Edge (model years 2006 to 2012) as well as certain vehicle types of the group brands Lincoln and Mercury are affected. In addition, the NHTSA ordered the recall of almost 6,000 cars from the Japanese manufacturer Mazda, which had also submitted a petition to the authorities.

As is further reported, the largest US automaker General Motors (GM) had already failed with such an application in November. He had to repair 5.9 million vehicles. In terms of costs, the group assumed around 1.2 billion dollars.

As the press agencies continue to write, defective Takata airbags have been causing problems for the auto industry for years and have even caused the largest US car recall to date. Countless other car manufacturers are also affected – including German manufacturers such as Audi and BMW.

The problem here was previously excessively strong triggering air cushions that throw parts of the metal cladding through the vehicle. Numerous injuries and 29 deaths have been linked to it. Takata has signed a guilty pledge for manufacturing errors in the United States and accepted a billion-dollar fine. The airbag debacle then drove the company into bankruptcy in 2017, according to dpa / APA.
