For the seals – at sea: a Thai sailor rescued kittens from a burning ship
Sailor of the Royal Thai Navy, 23-year-old Tatsafon Saiyi threw himself into the waters of the Adaman Sea and swam to the wreckage of a burning fishing boat to rescue the frightened kittens.
Eight crew members – five Burmese and three Thais – managed to escape and evacuate on a fishing boat passing by. But four frightened kittens remained on the ship and tried to escape the fire and water at the same time.
Tatsafon swam 50 feet (over 15 meters) in rough water before reaching the sinking ship. He put three cats in an old rice sack, and put the fourth on his shoulder and swam back to his ship.
All kittens are healthy and alive, and an old wooden fishing boat was left to burn out near the island of Ko Adang in the south of Thailand.
“When we arrived, everything was done to secure the wreckage and check for fuel spills. But we spotted cats on board. I immediately took off my shirt, put on a life jacket and jumped into the sea. The flame was at the stern of the boat, but it began to sink, so I had to hurry. I'm so glad we managed to save the kittens. They would drown or die of thirst if they were carried out to sea, “- quotes the cat-rescue sailor Metro .
The kittens were watered from dehydration, fed and nursed on board a naval vessel. There were no other injuries in the animals. At the port, the kittens were removed from the ship and placed in the navy office to find new owners for them.
And in Japan, a zoo enthusiast lives and takes care of abandoned cats near Fukushima-1. Ten years ago, Sakae Kato stayed behind to rescue cats abandoned by neighbors after the nuclear power plant disaster. More than 40 cats and several wild boars are under the supervision of a man.
