Scientists from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have published a massive study on climate change and the meteorological state of the planet. It is reported that the report's findings will play a key role at the COP-26 environmental summit to be held in November in Glasgow. In the course of the work, a group of researchers analyzed more than 14 thousand scientific papers published over the past ten years. In their report, UN experts fully assigned responsibility for climate change to humans.
From 1970 to the present, the report says the planet's temperatures have risen faster than any other 50-year period in the past 2,000 years. The authors noted that with the continued industrial activity of human society, the level of rise of the World Ocean could increase by 2 meters by the 2100s. This will pose a potential threat to coastal residents and threaten flooding in a number of countries.
However, the studies mentioned in the report confirm that with proper and timely regulation of the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the overall temperature rise can be contained within 1.5 ° C. “Otherwise, extreme weather events will become more frequent,” says Pierce Forster, a climate change expert at the University of Leeds.
The COP-26 Summit, held under the auspices of the UN, is seen as a key event in the field of international climate cooperation. UN Secretary General António Guterres said that the report of the IPCC working group is a signal to all mankind: “If we join forces now, we can prevent a climate catastrophe. But, as the report makes clear, there is no time for delay and no room for excuses. I count on government leaders and all stakeholders to ensure the success of COP-26. ”
