For the first time, combat robots Uran-9 and Nerekhta were involved in the West-2021 exercises
200 thousand servicemen and almost a thousand units of military equipment. The main stage of the strategic exercises of Russia and Belarus began. Vladimir Putin is watching the maneuvers. The Russian leader personally arrived at the Mulino training ground. The head of state is accompanied by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov. Today the Mulino training ground of the Western Military District has turned into a real war zone. The so-called active phase of the strategic exercises of the year “West-2021” is taking place here. In fact, this is the crown of military training this year. For the first time, robotic systems – the Uran-9 and Nerekhta reconnaissance and fire support robots – are taking part in an exercise of this kind.
Exercises “West” are really very large, about 200 thousand personnel are taking part in them. But they cannot be called any special, because the teachings are traditional, they are held annually, usually in the fall. It's just that this year they are joint – Russian-Belarusian. And this is also not unusual. After all, such maneuvers of the two countries, by decision of the heads of Russia and Belarus, are held once every two years.
“By the way, we are often accused that the Union State is a purely political project. No. This is a unique integration association, advanced in all directions, and in politics too. Take our military-political alliance, we are not hiding it. In many areas – such as foreign policy, defense policy, security – we have advanced far, ”said President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.
“These teachings are not directed against anyone. But their implementation is logical in conditions when other associations, NATO, for example, are actively building up their military presence near the borders of the Union State and the CSTO space, ”said Russian President Vladimir Putin.
As for the venue. First, it is determined by the concept of the exercises – this is a reflection of aggression against the Union State of Russia and Belarus. Therefore, it is quite obvious that the exercises are being conducted on the western borders, including at five military training grounds in Belarus. For more than a week, Russian units have been there and are learning to act in concert with the Belarusians. But larger-scale actions, of course, take place at nine training grounds in Russia.

The exercises are as open as possible to foreign media. Our press pool, which was organized by the Russian Ministry of Defense alone, includes more than 50 journalists from different parts of the world: from the USA, Great Britain, France, Germany, Poland, Japan, China and other countries.
“70% of the generals in China graduated from Russian military universities,” said a journalist from the PRC, Lu Yuguang.
Today is the main day of the West-2021 exercises. But they don't end there. Until September 16, subunits of different types and branches of the armed forces will continue training at several other training grounds. And only after that will they start redeploying to their permanent bases.
More than 120 military representatives from 45 foreign countries are watching the exercises. This was reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense. The joint maneuvers will last until September 16 at the military training grounds of Belarus and Russia.
