First transgender senator to appear in US

Democratic Representative Sarah McBride became the first transgender person in US history to win a Senate seat. Reported by The New York Times.

McBride will represent Delaware. The newspaper indicates that upon being sworn in, she will become the highest ranking transgender in the country.

After the victory, the Democrat said that she was “incredibly grateful” to the residents of her area. She also expressed hope that the election results will “send a signal to young people who find it difficult to fit into [the standards of] this world,” and show that in American democracy there is a place for everyone, and their votes are important.

McBride worked as a trainee in the administration of the 44th US President Barack Obama. She has also served as Press Secretary for the Human Rights Campaign.

Earlier it became known that Democrats and Republicans “exchanged” seats in the Senate: John Hickenlooper from the Democratic Party took a seat from Colorado, while in Alabama Tommy Tuberville was elected from the “Reds”. In the current Senate, Republicans hold 53 seats against 47 for Democrats. If representatives of the Democratic Party can win four more seats, then both houses of Congress will control.

General Election Day was held in the United States on November 3. Citizens elected a president and vice president, 35 senators, the entire House of Representatives, 13 governors and local government representatives. There are no final results of the presidential election yet, but incumbent leader Donald Trump has declared his victory.
