A person died from H5N1 bird flu in the US state of Louisiana. This is the first death from the disease reported in the country.
The Louisiana Department of Health reported this.
The patient who died from bird flu was over 65 years old and had underlying health conditions. He became infected after coming into contact with backyard flocks of birds and wild birds.
Health officials said their investigation has found no other human cases related to the patient's infection.
According to the World Health Organization, there have been about 900 cases of bird flu worldwide since 2003. More than half of the people have died. However, experts do not believe that the virus kills half of the people it infects.
A study by scientists at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the first 46 human cases of bird flu in the country in 2024 showed that almost all patients had a mild form of the disease. All but one of the infections occurred after contact with infected farm animals.
Recall that in December, the first case of severe bird flu in humans was recorded in the US. Officials reported “alarming results” from tests taken from the patient.
