The number of Danish residents who have died after being infected with the omicron strain of coronavirus is 18. This is reported by TASS, citing the Ritzaus Bureau.
The State Serum Institute clarified that we are talking about data from November 21 to December 28, when 55.7 thousand cases of infection with a new strain were detected. During the same period, 100 deaths were recorded due to other known variants of COVID-19.
For the first time, the institute reported on the number of deaths associated with the omicron strain. This variant was registered in Denmark at the end of November, and today it accounts for about 90 percent of all positive tests for coronavirus infection.
On December 1, the chief infectious disease specialist of the United States, Anthony Fauci, announced that the omicron strain of the coronavirus could spread more easily. “The molecular profile of the mutation suggests it can be passed on more easily,” Fauci said. In addition, it is assumed that the new strain may partially escape protection from vaccines. “But we don't know for sure … We need to be prepared,” he concluded.
