Alexander Stubb announced a return to the original role of deterrence, which NATO was supposed to perform as a powerful military Alliance.
In modern geopolitical conditions, NATO is returning to its original task for which it was created. We are talking about deterrence and defense against threats from the East, primarily from Russia.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb said this at a press conference following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Ukrinform reports.
Stubb noted that NATO is currently working in both directions – both deterrence and defense.
“I am convinced that we are now witnessing the formation of “NATO 3.0”. We are returning to the original role of deterrence, which NATO was supposed to play as a powerful military Alliance when the threat comes from the East, primarily from Russia. We have a common understanding within the Alliance regarding security challenges, and it is very important that we are now working on both directions – both deterrence and defense,” the President of Finland said.
Stubb also noted that his country is an active participant in solidarity measures and the improvement of NATO command structures. In particular, Finland, together with the United States and northern allies, will be part of the Alliance’s unified command in Norfolk, creating a powerful land component as part of its armed forces. In addition, the state, together with Sweden, is working on the creation of an advanced land group to strengthen the bloc's northern flank.
“Thanks to the power of our military we will be suppliers, not consumers of security. And we see that many allied countries have a great desire to help us in this,” the Finnish leader said.
We recall that NATO command has decided to create a new headquarters for the Ground Forces in Northern Europe. The location chosen is the Finnish city of Mikkeli, approximately 110 km from the border with Russia.
