The journalist notes that the idea of ”Finlandization” Ukraine has an obvious disadvantage: Helsinki recently abandoned its neutrality, which lasted for several decades
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz does not support new decisions regarding Ukraine's membership in NATO.
This was discussed at a meeting between Scholz and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Voice of America reports.
“We made decisions (at NATO summits – Ed.) in Vilnius and Washington that correspond well to the current situation. I think there is no need for new decisions on this matter yet, because the situation has not changed since then,” Scholz believes.
At the same time, he assured that Germany will continue to provide powerful assistance to Ukraine. “It is important now to ensure that Ukraine does not run out of weapons,” said the German Chancellor.
At the same time, NATO Secretary General Rutte emphasized that the war is spreading beyond Ukraine.
“If Putin defeats Ukraine, he will not stop there. Russia is already conducting a more active campaign of hybrid attacks on the territories of our allies, directly interfering in our democracies, sabotaging industry and committing violence. All this in order to weaken us and sow division. The front line in this war is no longer just within Ukraine. The front line is increasingly moving beyond the borders – into the Baltic region, into Western Europe and even into the far north,” the new Secretary General of the Alliance noted.
“Finlandization” of Ukraine: details from a journalist
Politico journalist Hans von der Burchard reported that Scholz discussed a proposal at a meeting with Rutte for Ukraine to have a neutral status, as before Finland.
“This (unofficially) voiced proposal appeared against the background of talks in Berlin about creating a “contact group” together with China, India and Brazil for negotiationsabout a peaceful solution with Russia. “Giving Ukraine the prospect of NATO membership would make such peace talks impossible,” the journalist wrote on his X (Twitter) page.
Hans von der Burchard notes that the idea of ”Finlandization” of Ukraine has an obvious flaw: Helsinki recently abandoned its decades-long neutrality and joined NATO because Putin's Russia is dangerous and violates international law.
“Ukraine even claims that Merkel's opposition to Kiev's accession to NATO in 2008 led to today's war,” the journalist recalled.
However, Finland itself, which recently joined NATO, is against such a scenario.
“Not in it is in our interests to restore any artificial spheres of interest. Finland's Cold War model of neutrality belongs to a period of history that should have been freed long ago,” the journalist recalled the words of Finnish Ambassador to Berlin Kai Sauer.
Baerbock explained Germany's position
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock commented on rumors about the possibility of “Finlandization” of Ukraine. This was reported by “RBK-Ukraine”.
“What is Germany's position? Clear – the future of Ukraine is with both the EU and NATO. We stated this in the NATO declaration in Washington this summer. Putin wants to make this free decision of Ukraine impossible,” Baerbock said.
She clarified that joining NATO was a free decision of Finland and Sweden, and they clearly stated their position.
Earlier, Olaf Scholz explained why Ukraine cannot become a member of NATO.
