Finland will no longer allow cyclists across the border: what does Russia have to do with it

by alex

In recent months, a record number of Russians without entry documents have tried to enter Finland. In particular, illegal immigrants have increasingly tried to enter on bicycles, so Finland is now taking action.

According to the Finnish Border Guard, Russian border guards previously did not allow people to enter border crossings if they did not have visas. Now the situation has changed.

This was reported by the Finnish publication Yle.

Since August, 91 undocumented people have tried to cross the eastern border into Finland. These are citizens of third countries who used Russia as a transit country. They asked for asylum in Finland.

In recent days, changes have been noticed at the border in the vehicles used to enter Finland. In particular, illegal immigrants have increasingly tried to enter Finland on bicycles .

“Over the past week there have been about 30 such cases. This is clearly an increasing phenomenon,” says Lieutenant Colonel Jukka Lukkari, deputy commander of the Border Guard of South-Eastern Finland.

Previously, people crossing the border on bicycles used them only for short local trips, he said. Now they were trying to enter the country in this way without the necessary papers, as well as without bicycle lights and safety helmets.

When Finnish border guards noticed that there were more and more such pseudo-cyclists, the country began to fight this phenomenon. As of November 9, people can no longer enter Finland from Russia on bicycles due to border crossings in the southeast of the country.

“From a Finnish point of view, it makes sense to focus control on road transport. This will help to better control cross-border traffic,” says Luckari.

Let us remind you that earlier Finland began to fence itself off from Russia with a real and modern fence. Currently, the construction of a test section of the fence on the eastern border with the aggressor country of the Russian Federation has already been completed.

In turn, Russia announced the termination of cross-border cooperation with Finland. The Russian Federation called this “a response to confrontational actions against Russia.”
