Finland plans to return Russian migrants home . Next week the government will introduce legislation allowing border guards to block asylum seekers trying to enter from Russia.
Reuters writes about this with reference to the prime minister’s statement.
As noted, Finland closed its border with Russia last year to stem the growing number of arrivals from countries such as Syria and Somalia. The country's government has accused Moscow of using migration as a weapon against it and the European Union. But the Kremlin denies this claim.
Therefore, Finland plans to introduce a law that will allow border guards to return Russian migrants back to the Russian Federation. It is stated that the application of the law will be temporary.
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said the proposal will go to parliament next week, where it will be submitted to the constitutional committee.
“Since this phenomenon is in the hands of Russia – who, where and when comes to the Finnish border – we cannot allow this. Therefore, we must strengthen our legislation,” Orpo said.
This year, when Finland closed land border crossings, fewer than 40 migrants crossed from Russia through the desert, compared with about 1,300 migrants who arrived through those points last year, Border Guard data shows. One railway checkpoint remains open, but only for cargo.
Finnish leaders say legislation is still needed as migrants could start arriving again as warm weather makes travel easier.
“There are still thousands of people in Russia… waiting to get to the Finnish border,” Orpo emphasized.
Recall that Finnish President Alexander Stubb said that now the only way to peace in Ukraine is through the battlefield.
