Finnish police suspect the cable was damaged by an “external force”.
Finnish authorities have detained the Eagle S oil tanker, which belongs to the “shadow” Russian fleet, on suspicion of damaging the Estlink 2 underwater power cable, which connects Finland with Estonia.
The Financial Times reported this.
A ship carrying oil from Russia to Egypt under the flag of the Cook Islands was found in the Gulf of Finland with a damaged cable. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the incident.
According to ship tracking data, the Eagle S voluntarily stopped in Finnish waters, but its ownership is “vague, but it appears to be the only vessel owned by the Dubai company.”
According to Verkkouutiset, Finnish police believe the cable was damaged by an “external force.” Director of the National Bureau of Investigation Robin Lardo noted that there were no anchors visible on board the tanker, and “for this reason the police had reason to suspect that something unusual was happening with the vessel.”
Recall that an electrical cable between two NATO countries was damaged in the Baltic Sea.
