Film director and screenwriter Eldar Kuliyev dies in Baku

Azerbaijani film director and screenwriter Eldar Guliyev died at the age of 80 after a long illness, the press service of the Union of Cinematographers of the country said.

It is noted that the director passed away in a hospital in Baku early Friday morning.

Eldar Kuliyev was born in Baku on January 18, 1941. In 1966 he graduated from the directing department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography, where he studied at the workshop of Sergei Gerasimov. Then Kuliev worked at the Azerbaijanfilm film studio. And in 1969 his feature film “In this southern city” was released, based on the script of the Azerbaijani writer Magsud Ibrahimbekov. Critics note that it was this picture that laid the foundation for a new stage in Azerbaijani cinematography.

In addition, such films of Kuliev as “Babek”, “Nizami”, “Main Interview”, “The Bay of Joy”, “The Legend of the Silver Lake”, “Istanbul Flight”, “Notes of a Dervish” are known. By the way, in “Nizami” the main role was played by People's Artist of the USSR Muslim Magomayev, with whom the director had been friends for many years.

In 1982, Kuliev was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR. He was also a professor at the cinema department of the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts and headed the Guild of Professional Filmmakers of Azerbaijan.
