Roger Federer
After his knee surgery, Roger Federer talks about his comeback plans. The 40-year-old praises his great rival Novak Djokovic.
Roger Federer lets tennis fans breathe a sigh of relief. “I've already got the worst behind me,” the 40-year-old told the sports information service SID during a sponsorship meeting in Zurich. “Now I'm looking forward to everything that awaits me.”
The Swiss player played his last game in early July when he failed in three sets in the Wimbledon quarter-finals against Hubert Hurkacz from Poland. Federer then had another operation on his right knee and canceled the other highlights of the season such as the Olympics or the US Open.
Mentally, the injury wasn't a big problem for him. “I already went through the same thing last year,” says the 20-time Grand Slam champion. “I hope that I can get back on the tennis court as soon as possible. But it still takes a little patience.”
In the absence of his long-standing rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic almost managed to win the “Grand Slam” at the US Open, i.e. all four major tournaments within one year. Only in the final did Daniil Medvedev let the Serbian dream come to an end.
“I think it's possible,” said Federer when asked about the “Grand Slam”. Djokovic has proven that this year. “But it will be very, very difficult. What Novak has achieved this year is also so mad.”
