The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will check the congressmen for possible assistance to the participants in the storming of the Capitol. This was reported by the CNN TV channel.
The agency plans to establish whether one of the legislators could have accidentally or intentionally helped the protesters. The FBI obtained evidence of contacts between congressmen and participants in the assault in the days preceding the riots. In addition, the department has recordings of conversations between the alleged participants in the riots, in which they discuss their ties with members of Congress, whose names are not disclosed.
However, the FBI has yet to press charges against specific legislators. If investigators suspect that one of the congressmen or their assistants helped the participants in the assault, they can request a warrant to gain access to the content of their conversations. So far, no such steps have been taken, the channel notes.
On January 6, protesters supporters of former US President Donald stormed the Capitol Building and surrounded the Senate Hall. The Senate and the House of Representatives interrupted the meeting, where it was planned to approve the results of the last elections, in which Joe Biden won. After the riots, law enforcement officers opened almost 300 criminal cases.
