Alex Quinonez, the 2019 World Cup third place over 200 m, was killed in Guayaquil on Friday evening. The 32-year-old Ecuadorian was shot dead by strangers, as reported by local media and the Spanish news agency EFE.
According to witnesses, Quinonez was walking with another person on the edge of an industrial park when they were intercepted by gunmen who fired multiple shots from their vehicle. The person accompanying the sprinter was also killed in the attack.
Quinonez was banned for a year in July for missing three doping tests. That's why the winner of the Pan American Games 2019 over 200 m was also missing from the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
