Rene Fasel, Honorary President of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and Member of the Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), commented on the cancellation of the World Youth Hockey Championship (MHM) 2022. He told RBC that the decision was made due to the situation with the coronavirus at the championship.
“What happened at the MFM is a real nightmare. The situation had to be taken under control, perhaps it was possible to limit ourselves to a large number of restrictions in the tournament, but the federation made such a decision, which is quite a consequence of this situation, those are the times, ”Fasel said.
In conversations with TASS, Fasel said that he was disappointed and upset for the Ice Hockey Federation of Canada, as there were “huge investments” and now there will be huge losses.
The cancellation of the youth ice hockey world championship became known on Wednesday evening, December 29. This decision was made due to outbreaks of coronavirus in several teams. Two players in the Russian team became infected, they were sent to quarantine. It is known that the test for coronavirus was positive, including in 17-year-old Matvey Michkov.
Before the cancellation of the championship, it became known about the cancellation of the match between the national teams of Russia and Slovakia at the MFM. The Russian team was awarded a technical defeat with a score of 0: 1. Teams from the United States and the Czech Republic, where cases of coronavirus were also identified, were also awarded technical injuries.
The youth ice hockey world championship was to be held from December 26 to January 5 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Canada. It was planned that Russia will play in the group stage with the USA, Sweden, Slovakia and Switzerland.
