The Chelsea fans successfully protested against the Super League
The “Football Supporters Europe” (FSE) fan network has demanded consequences from the events surrounding the failed Super League plans. “We are calling for stronger regulation. We are calling for immediate action to protect our clubs and communities,” said a statement on Wednesday. “The real fight begins now.”
The network continues: “In order to avoid a repetition of this week's debacle, fan representatives must be involved in decision-making processes and club cartels must be prevented from going unpunished.” The problems revealed by the plans of an elite league would not go away overnight.
The FSE therefore want to continue to put pressure on the associations so that the latest events lead to positive and lasting change. “Most urgently, we will continue to question plans to expand the UEFA Champions League, with a particular focus on number of matches, access list and revenue distribution.”
On the night of Monday, twelve top clubs from Spain, Italy and England announced that they wanted to establish a Super League as soon as possible. On the night of Wednesday, the clubs from England finally turned away. Other clubs followed suit.
The Champions League reform, which was also sharply criticized by many fans, was decided by UEFA on Monday. From 2024, 36 instead of the previous 32 clubs will take part in the premier class. In addition, the first phase is no longer divided into groups, but rather played in a league format. Two of the four additional starting places are not awarded on the basis of current performance, but rather on the basis of the UEFA five-year ranking.
