In the Philippines, a famous journalist was killed on air while he was presenting a radio program. The man was shot dead at his home in Calamba, which also served as his office.

The Independent reports this.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) said Juan Jumalon, 57, of Gold FM 94.7 and known to listeners as DJ Johnnie Walker, was shot and killed in Missamis Occidental on Sunday, November 5.

The attack by unidentified armed men occurred during a live broadcast on Facebook.

Jumalon became the 199th journalist killed in the Philippines since 1986, and the fourth under the administration of President Marcos Jr.

“Many journalists reported to us threats from politicians and their supporters after they covered the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections last October 30,” said NUJP senior member Kat Cortez.

Cebu Daily News reported that initial police investigations found that one of the assailants asked permission to enter the radio station premises to announce “something important.”

“Obviously, they knew the way, because they opened the iron gates and burst inside the radio station,” the media write.

As journalists write, one of the attackers took a pistol out of his pocket shortly before entering the booth, where Jumalon was on air. He allegedly fired once in the direction of the journalist while another man watched.

The journalist was rushed to the hospital, where upon arrival doctors pronounced him dead.
