The white sweater wasn't a lucky charm for Glasner
As the new coach of Eintracht Frankfurt, Oliver Glasner experienced a debacle on his competitive debut. At the third division SV Waldhof Mannheim, Eintracht delivered a shockingly weak performance on Sunday and, as a Bundesliga club, flew out of the DFB Cup in the first round due to the 2-0 defeat. Waldhof captain Marcel Seegert (48th minute) and Joseph Boyamba (51st) caused a surprise and a great atmosphere among the hosts with their goals in front of 12,151 spectators in the Carl Benz Stadium. To make matters worse, Frankfurt's defense chief Martin Hinteregger (62nd) also saw yellow-red because of repeated foul play.
What Frankfurt offered its fans who traveled with them in the first competitive game under Glasner should cause concern a few days before the start of the league at Borussia Dortmund. In contrast to two years ago, when Eintracht had won 5-3 in Mannheim in the first round, this time the two teams didn’t deliver a spectacle. Without the banned Filip Kostic, the Frankfurters lacked ideas on the offensive. Again and again Glasner's team played across or back against deep hosts, only top-class chances were not created. Waldhof should have led at half time.
First newcomer Marc Schnatterer (40th) failed with a free kick to national goalkeeper Kevin Trapp. Immediately before the break, Mannheim striker Dominik Martinovic had a huge chance to take the lead, but he could not overcome Trapp either free in front of the goal. Frankfurt, on the other hand, was only dangerous once: new signing Jesper Lindstrøm (23rd) put his free kick just over the goal.

In addition to the 21-year-old Dane, Glasner had ordered two more new ones into his starting line-up. Rafael Borré hardly got any balls in the center of the storm, however, and Kostic's substitute Christopher Lenz fell on the left wing mainly through bad passes. So it happened as it had to: After a Schnatterer corner, Seegert headed in undisturbed to 1-0, only three minutes later Boyamba chipped the ball into the goal after a fine presentation by Martinovic via Trapp.
And it got worse. Because Hinteregger pulled the fast Marcel Costly by the jersey in the running duel, he saw his second yellow card and had to leave the field. Then Martinovic (71st) would have had to increase free in front of Trapp, but the keeper parried again.
