Facebook wanted to rename and become the metaverse

IT giant Facebook may change its name in the near future. Only the social network that is part of the parent company will continue to use the old one. The Verge explained that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg does not want the company name to be associated only with social networks. In the near future, the businessman plans to create an entire metaverse.

The management is carefully hiding the new name of Facebook, but soon the secret should be revealed. As reported by The Verge, the future changes can be officially announced at the annual Connect conference on October 28.

Back in July 2021, Zuckerberg promised The Verge that Facebook should change dramatically in the next five years. “We intend to move away from the fact that people perceive us as a social networking company. We plan to be perceived as a metaverse company, ”he said.

Now the parent company Facebook controls not only the social network of the same name, but also other services – the WhatsApp messenger, the Instagram social network, the company for the development of virtual and augmented reality headsets Oculus. Zuckerberg's plans to create a metaverse suggest that in the future, the IT giant will acquire and create more and more companies for the development and production of various gadgets.

According to some indirect signs – the renaming of some of the company's fresh products – The Verge journalists suggested that Horizon could become the new name of Facebook.

Facebook representatives declined to confirm The Verge's information. In response to an inquiry from Ren-TV, they said that they “do not comment on rumors and speculations.”

Renaming the parent company to separate its perception from one of the products is not uncommon in IT. For example, Google's parent organization was renamed Alphabet in 2015, and the company that launched the Snapchat messenger became Snap Inc. in 2016.

The term “metaverse” was first used by science fiction writer Neil Stevenson in his 1992 novel Avalanche. It means combining conventional, augmented and virtual reality in a common online space. Zuckerberg promised that the new project will provide great opportunities for people of creative professions and those who live in places where access to education is limited. He noted that no company would single-handedly own and operate the metaverse. Zuckerberg plans to be decentralized and run by multiple members.

The company has already hired 10,000 new employees to implement the ambitious project.
