Facebook stated that its Instagram social network has a positive effect on teens and helps them solve many psychological problems. The company conducted the research in response to allegations that Instagram harms the mental health of minors. Facebook has also been rebuked for inaction following the publication of a study on the dangers of Instagram for children.
According to Reuters, the head of the security department of Facebook Antigone Davis will make a relevant report at a hearing in the US Senate. The publication notes that Davis will talk about the implementation of the company's projects aimed at protecting children and adolescents on the Internet.
“Our research has shown that many struggling teens say Instagram helps them cope with the troublesome problems typical of adolescence,” Davis said in the report.
The document also claims that 57% of teenage girls who have previously experienced a low mood say Instagram helped them. The positive impact of Instagram was also noted by 51% of teenage girls who previously felt lonely.
The next session of the Senate hearings regarding Facebook will take place on October 4.
In mid-September, it was reported that Facebook had conducted internal research confirming that Instagram was harming the mental health of young users.
Earlier “Secret” wrote that Instagram will oblige all users of the service to indicate the date of birth. The management of the social network believes that such a requirement will better ensure the safety of adolescents when using the application.
