On October 15, the Face Pay payment system will be launched at all Moscow metro stations, according to the website of the Moscow Mayor's Office. Previously, the system worked in test mode. According to the Moscow Department of Transport, more than 9 thousand people have joined the service in just 20 minutes from the moment of launch.
According to the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport, Maxim Liksutov, Moscow is the first city in the world where such a system has worked on such a scale, at more than 240 stations (excluding the MCC, MCD and the monorail). At the same time, the deputy mayor stressed that payment using Face Pay is only one of the possible options, the connection is voluntary. “Other payment methods are not going anywhere,” he said.
To use Face Pay, you need to link your photo, bank card and Troika card to the service via the Moscow Metro app. As stated in the message on the website of the mayor's office, when paying using Face Pay, confidential information will be encrypted – the camera will only read the biometric key, not the face image.
“If necessary, we will adjust the number of turnstiles for Face Pay, if we understand that the demand for it is growing,” said Mr. Liksutov.
Also, the deputy mayor said that glasses and masks would not interfere with facial recognition. “Transparent glasses and masks will not interfere with the recognition of a passenger's face if at least 40% of his face remains open. If most of the face is covered, then it will take a little more time to recognize the passenger. When passing through the turnstile, slide the mask down – then the system will recognize you faster, ”he said.
