The fifth generation fighter F-35A Lightning II, created by the American corporation Lockheed Martin, can become a “killer” of enemy ships, writes the American magazine The National Interest.
The publication recalls that in February, a missile developed by the Norwegian company Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace (KDA) was dropped from the internal compartment of the F-35A Lightning II, designed to destroy ground and surface targets.
The magazine notes that the tested weapons are based on the RGM-184 anti-ship missiles, otherwise known as the Naval Strike Missile (NSM). Photos of the F-35A Lightning II with NSM, which, according to some experts, can destroy Russian ships, are available on Twitter.
In January, The Drive reported that the US Navy will arm at least one of its ships with RGM-184 missiles in 2022.
In February 2019, on the pages of the Polish portal Defense24, military expert Maximilian Dura said that NSM “allows you to block the movement of civilian ships bound for or from Russia,” thereby “burying Russian hopes of supporting sea communications.”
Anti-ship missile NSM (in the American designation – RGM-184) is designed to engage surface targets. Developed by the Norwegian company Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace. The speed of the rocket reaches 0.95 Mach number, the range is 185 kilometers.
