Authorities have not said what caused the explosion.
On Wednesday, November 22, a car that had driven from Canada into the United States exploded on the Rainbow Bridge near Niagara Falls. As a result of the incident, at least two people who were in the car died.
CNN reports this with reference to its own sources in law enforcement agencies.
According to the publication, the car passed through the primary checkpoint checking passports and licenses. According to multiple law enforcement sources, the vehicle was sent to another area for a second search. As the vehicle was heading toward the secondary search area, an explosion occurred.
Authorities have not said what caused the explosion.
The FBI, New York State Police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection are investigating. Federal authorities are trying to obtain video from different angles because witness accounts differ, sources said.
“We don't really know much, just that there was a vehicle trying to enter the U.S. and they blocked both sides of the bridge,” Aaron Ferguson, public information officer for the city of Niagara Falls, told CNN.
There are four crossing points between Canada and the United States near Niagara Falls.
Sources said no one other than the people in the car were seriously injured.
According to ABC News sources, investigators found a suitcase or briefcase at the scene. They are considering it as a possible explosive device, explosives experts are working with the find.
