In July 2021, the global temperature reached a record high for all 142 years of meteorological observations, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, part of the Department of Commerce).

According to the department, this month the total temperature of the Earth's surface and the ocean was 0.93 degrees Celsius above the average in the 20th century, which was 15.8 degrees. The current figure is 0.01 degrees higher than the previous record set in 2016.

In the Northern Hemisphere, where 67.3% of the land is located, the Earth's surface temperature exceeded the average value by 1.54 degrees Celsius and surpassed the record from 2012.

Asia has the hottest July on record, according to NOAA, breaking a record set in 2010. In Europe, July 2021 became hotter than July 2010 (previous high, then the same figure was reached in 2018).

July 2021 “surpassed itself as the hottest month ever recorded,” according to NOAA spokesman Rick Spinrad. “In this case, first place is the worst place,” he said.

On August 10, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report on global warming. Scientists reported that they recorded faster and more intense climate change in all regions and the entire climate system on the planet. The global temperature is rising in the world, sea level is rising, and carbon dioxide emissions are increasing, they warned. Some changes are irreversible over hundreds of thousands of years.

Climate change is caused by human activities, the report says. It is already leading to numerous cases of extreme weather in all regions of the planet. Experts believe that humanity is able to limit the scale of climate change by significantly reducing emissions of harmful substances, including greenhouse gases, into the atmosphere.

UN Secretary General António Guterres called the expert group's findings a wake-up call for all of humanity. He recalled that in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement, the international community agreed to keep the global temperature rise at no more than 1.5 degrees. However, according to the secretary general, if urgent measures are not taken, this threshold will be crossed in the near future. He called on all countries, especially those in the G20, to renew their commitment to fighting climate change.

According to Tatyana Pozdnyakova, chief specialist of the Moscow meteorological office, anthropogenic factors are partly to blame for the climate warming, but the system also has its own fluctuations. She believes that the average annual temperature in the Northern Hemisphere could return to normal in 2035. Deputy Director of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Semyonov suggested that the return of temperature to the climatic norm is possible closer to the second half of the 21st century.
