The US and EU authorities have already approved a “right to repair”, which guarantees the maintainability of the devices sold. The Russian technology company Selectel speculated on whether the same law could be adopted in Russia.
In a blog on Habré, the company mentioned that the US Federal Trade Commission recently decided to actively fight illegal restrictions on the repair of complex devices. This idea is supported by US President Joe Biden. He asked to strengthen opposition to the “repair arbitrariness” of large companies.
The European Union, meanwhile, obliged manufacturers from 2021 to supply spare parts for their devices for ten years and design equipment so that it does not require rare tools for repairs. France has advanced better than others: this country already requires all manufacturers and importers of equipment to indicate a maintainability index on the packaging.
Fortunately, Russia does not stay away from the global trend. In April, the Ministry of Natural Resources proposed to introduce similar requirements. It is noted that in Russia the list of goods with the “right to repair” will be established by the government. Manufacturers will be required to keep a stock of parts for repair during the entire specified period.
Selectel said that manufacturers are, of course, unhappy with such laws. Domestic companies have already announced that the introduction of the European regulation will lead to higher prices for products. It can be expected that manufacturers of hardware and electronics will resist the “right to repair”. And it can drag on for several years.
