Experts advise against giving the AstraZeneca vaccine to people over 65

Experts from the Standing Committee on Vaccinations (Stiko) of the Robert Koch Institute of Virology in Germany have advised against giving the vaccine from the British-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to people over 65. Deutsche Welle writes about it.

Experts have confirmed that the drug can be administered to people aged 18 to 64 years. However, there is insufficient evidence that it will be effective for people over 65.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) will decide on the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine on January 29, Deutsche Welle notes. Now it is actively used in the vaccination campaign in the UK, including for the elderly.

In January, it was reported that AstraZeneca would not be able to ship the expected number of doses of its vaccine to European countries. According to the German newspaper Bild, then one of the reasons for the disruption of supplies was a fire at a vaccine plant under construction in the Indian city of Pune.
