Expert explains how Trump's policies could affect Ukraine

He noted that Trump can force Kyiv to agree to Russia's conditions.

The victory of Donald Trump and the Republican Party will entail significant changes in US foreign policy, and Ukraine will lose the most from this.

This was reported by the political economist, philosopher, Stanford University professor Francis Fukuyama in a column for the Financial Times.

“Ukraine has undoubtedly suffered the biggest defeat from Trump's victory. Its military struggle with Russia weakened even before the election, and Trump can force Kiev to agree to Russia's terms by holding on to its guns, as the Republican House of Representatives did for six months last winter,” the expert said.

Fukuyama noted that Trump has privately threatened to leave NATO, but even if he does not, he can significantly weaken the Alliance by not fulfilling its obligations under Article 5. Europe has no alternative to US leadership, so NATO's future ability to withstand challenges from Russia and China remains in question.

According to Fukuyama, a Trump presidency could see a gradual erosion of liberal institutions, similar to what happened in Hungary after Viktor Orban returned to power in 2010.

Francis Fukuyama believes that a second presidential term for Donald Trump could have devastating consequences for the United States, exacerbating social and political polarization.

“He has deepened the already significant polarization in society and transformed the United States from a high-trust society to a low-trust society; he has demonized the government and weakened the belief that it represents the collective interests of Americans; he has cruded political rhetoric and allowed bigotry and misogyny to be aired openly. And the scale of the Republican victory — from the presidency to the Senate and likely the House — will be interpreted as a powerful political mandate reaffirming these ideas and allowing Trump to do as he pleases. We can only hope that the remaining institutional strongholds will remain in place when he takes office,” the expert noted.

Fukuyama said that Trump's new term will be radically different from his previous one.

Domestic Policy Trump

“Donald Trump not only wants to roll back neoliberalism and “woke liberalism,” he also poses a serious threat to classical liberalism itself. Many voters simply don't take his rhetoric seriously, and mainstream Republicans argue that the system of checks and balances will prevent him from doing the worst he can. This is a mistake: we must take his stated intentions very seriously,” the expert added.

He stressed that Donald Trump's plan to impose tariffs of 10-20% on all imported goods. The destruction of supply chains will open up space for high levels of corruption and favoritism.

Regarding immigration, Trump not only intends to close the borders, but also to deport more than 11 million illegal immigrants.

In addition, such actions could entail moral problems, including the divorce of parents from their children.

As for the rule of law, during this campaign Trump is focused primarily on revenge for what he considers to be unfair persecution.
