Scientists at the Queensland University of Technology have conducted a new study in mice that found out how excessive sugar consumption in childhood affects health in adulthood.
As it turned out, children who consume sugar-rich foods risk in the future not only obesity, but also hyperactivity, as well as cognitive impairment. According to lead study author, QUT neurologist Professor Selena Bartlett, many children in more than 60 countries eat a diet that contains four times the amount of sugar recommended by the World Health Organization – 25 grams per person per day.
To find out how such a diet will affect the future, scientists have conducted experiments on mice. “ Our study showed that long-term sugar intake (12 weeks with mice that started the trial at five weeks of age) at a level that significantly increases weight gain causes abnormal and overstimulation of the nervous system in response to novelty. It also alters both episodic and spatial memory , ”shared Bartlett.
